In order to make a s’more, energy must be transferred between a heat source and the marshmallow and the marshmallow to the chocolate. Since you are competing against your classmates, your chocolate needs to melt fast!
During this learning cycle, you have learned about the relationships between heat, temperature and the kinetic energy of the object, as well as the relationship between the total energy of a system and the types, states and amounts of matter within that system. How will this information help you determine the most efficient method for melting the chocolate in your s’more?
In this task, your design team will plan an investigation to compare final water temperatures after different masses of ice have melted in the same volume of water with the same initial temperature. You will also be describing factors affecting the temperature (average kinetic energy of the particles) of various samples of matter.
Prior to your investigation, individually write the following in your science notebook:
Next, share your experimental design with your group. Determine similarities and differences among your experimental designs and identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new experimental design that better meets the criteria for success (each student must record the group investigation/design in their individual journal).
Each of your team designs must be peer edited by another group and then submitted for teacher final approval. Your team will then separate into two groups—each will complete the same investigation to determine the reliability and validity of your investigation. At the conclusion of your investigation, make sure to compare results with the other people in your group. In addition, each member of your design team is responsible for the following:
Your experimental conclusion must discuss the types of matter and the mass of the matter involved and how these factors affect temperature (average kinetic energy of the particles) of each sample of matter. You must also include a statement detailing how the results of your experiment will influence the design of your apparatus used to create a s’more.
